History of the Impala

One of Chevrolet’s and America’s most historic vehicle is the Impala. Over decades, it has set the standard for muscle cars in comfort and value. The Impala has made many distinct styling impacts from the crazed rear ends to the iconic grilles.

The Impala was first introduced at the GM Motorama in 1956 as a high-end Bel Air. The Bel Air Impala was built in Sport Coupe or Convertible models, which had a shorter greenhouse, longer rear deck and lower setting on an X-type frame.

The 1958 Impala was made to the public and was the first Chevrolet model to offer dual headlamps and triple taillights.

The most distinct-looking vehicle in American vehicle history would be the 1959 Impala. The Impala received a leaner, lower, wider styling with a bat-wing lid with “cat eye” sideway teardrop taillights. The 1959 Sport Sedan also had the option of four-doop hardtops to join the coupe and convertible body styles.

The 1961s Impalas were back to their symmetrical triple circle taillights and the batwing was less dramatic during these years. Also during that time, Chevrolet introduced the Impala Super Sport offering 360 horsepower and 409 cubic inch V8. It was the impala that blended elegance with speed and paved the way for muscle cars.

The 1964 Impala was restyled to a more rounded, softer look with the signature taillight and upside-down U-shaped aluminum trim strip above the taillights. The 1964 Impala remains the most popular and collectible to this day.

In 1966 the Impala received a new facelift with a revised horizontal bar grille up front and new triple rectangular taillights to replace the round lights. A chrome beltline strips were added to help with door dings. A four-speed manual transmission was offered with all V8 engines.
